2. Ford Ranger; 3514 (almost 60% of all Ford sales)

Three ute/pickup/bakkies, three small cars, three medium SUVs and a BoF 4x4 wagon...seems about right.
Holden are in real trouble though. Ford’s reliance on Ranger is of concern as is Nissan’s reliance on X-Trail.
On the other hand, Hyundai/Kia and Mazda are killing it. If both organisations make an impact with their forthcoming 2020 pickups (Mazda and Isuzu have teamed up for theirs) then they might give Toyota some hurt in maintaining its near 20% market share.

In the US, Mitsubishi sold 8,416 cars last month compared to their 7,067 cars in Oz. That explains why they are surviving in the US. So why do Americans consider them completely irrelevant? Comparison!
Ford sold nearly 82,000 F-Series trucks last month in the US. If Ford spun off the trucks into their own brand, then the F-Series would be the 6th best selling brand in the US while Ford would fall from 1st to 4th place.

For there being 24 million of you that isn’t that many cars I suppose. I mean if everyone is buying a HiLux... they’ll never need another vehicle!!!

Opposed to the US, vehicle operating costs are expensive, the operating environment is benign and vehicle finance is more expensive. So our fleet is small per head of population and it is one of the oldest in the developed world (~14 years from memory) .
We operate three vehicles (above average for most households) . The newest was bought brand new in 2002. The oldest was purchased brand new in 2000.

Mitsubishi in the US are perhaps considered irrelevant in the US because their offerings are irrelevant to US customers.
However, here in Oz, the Triton is going gangbusters as the value choice for private buyers (Ranger and Hilux sales are mostly mining, fleets and business) while both the ASX and Outlander are also relatively popular.
Our GM rebrand (Holden) on the other hand is fumbling about with weird and disconnected offerings...apart from the Eurodore, they are also about to launch the GMC Acadia and an $80,000 Camaro...let alone with the second string South Korean Chevs that Hyundai and Kia both run rings around...

They're long gone... however there remains the BoF Pajero Sport (based on the Triton).

The days when Ford and Holden carved up the market between them seem to be long gone. Looking at the figures Ford seem to have trouble selling anything but the Ranger (which is one of their slowest sellers here as it happens!).
Also, Oz can into Subarus. Not many other places can.

Oh shit...that sucks. It’d be great to see them get their act together but the Euro and Korean orphans, the marooned at the end of the line Colorado & Trailblazer and the new American blobs don’t make much of a compelling argument.
Killing their local dealer without public notice didn’t endear them either. Fortunately, the switch to Toyota only (plus Ford service and warranty) seems to have gone well enough for them.

Who the hell is buying Mitsubishi? Are they still riding the wave of public satisfaction from the old Mangas and Lancers?

ASX is a very popular rental fleet car. No idea why. Probably something to do with not much money. Triton speaks for itself. Outlander speaks to suburbia and the Netflix generation.

It’s gotta be discounts or something. Fuck the ASX. Maybe fleet drivers feel happier in an SUV? What a fuckup.
Ugh

Tasmania, Western Australia and Far north Queensland are full of ASX rental cars... and they count.
As for discounts... perhaps but Mitsubishi comes out ok in the bang for buck stakes when people cross shop. Not my cup of tea but clearly they are doing something right. And now they are doing it with Nissan and Renault...

I just don’t understand how something this mediocre can light up the sales charts
I mean maybe the price is decent and it’s
just good enough
. But since when has
good enough
been enough to make sales? Especially for Mitsu which many consider to be a dying brand
? As an example, I’m sure the new Commodore is
good enough
and priced well yet nobody wants it. It’s not an SUV but
still

You and me both. I had the debatable pleasure of driving one last year and I thought I was driving something like a mid 70s Ford Escort or early 80s Japanese wagon - noisy, wobbly handling and basic ergonomics. The somewhat flogged 70 series cab chassis that we drove afterwards was a great improvement in noise and handling!
As for since when has good enough been sufficient...it has got Hyundai and Kia to where the group is today and given them a platform...

I feel it’s more excusable for the Koreans since they occupied a deliberately lower end of the market. They were the “cheap brands” and they did well. Mitsubishi was not, it’s just making bad cars

I’m just jealous that Oz gets the Trailblazer still whereas we are stuck with the fatpig Traverse

The Isuzu MU-X is better (despite being a twin under the skin) and the sales reflect that...
